Abstract
The dynamics of sexually transmitted diseases and infections (STDs/STIs) amongst tertiary institutions students are significantly influenced by public health awareness campaign and behaviour changes resulting from treatment interventions strategies. A five-compartmental deterministic nonlinear ordinary differential equations were formulated to investigate the behaviour of the system. This study revealed that endemic equilibrium point is stable and the disease persist at , annihilation at and backward bifurcation backward bifurcation at with multiple equilibria. The findings showed that tertiary institution students would be a high-risk group for their social life as experimentation increases the students chance of been more exposed to STDs/STIs and the susceptible population of students in the study model would require the awareness and education on STDs/STIs by including it as part of the curriculum in the first year general studies (GNS) with key preventions strategies to curb the transmission dynamics amid the campuses. This study also revealed that lack of safe sex and hygiene management practices amongst year one/two students increases the surge vital and STDs/STIs reproduction number. This findings was a follow up of the study assessment of 475 tertiary institution students' knowledge on the transmission dynamics and control of sexually transmitted diseases on campus using a questionnaire. It was also shown that the mean age of the respondents was 18.5 years which comprises tertiary institution students of age 16, 17 and 18 regarding STDs/STIs. Parameters like recruitment rate, , spectral radius and removal rate are of great importance to the model system. Above all, the study recommends that public health sector should sustain their efforts in awareness campaigns, education, monitoring and surveillance essentials and the students should get tested regularly, practice safe sex and seek help if needed.
