Abstract

Transportation problems are a general class of optimization models within operations research, which deal with an optimal as-signing of many items from several origins to some destinations when considering several con icting target functions. This study is concerned with analyzing the sensitivity of multi-objective multi-item transportation problem and discusses how optimal solutions are influenced under different parametric changes. The paper presents a unified mathematical model for the optimization of both time- and cost-based resource consumption. An application on a three supplier, four demand center and two product type system is presented using the WinQSP software. The study shows that transport costs have the greatest sensitivity (coefficient of variation, 0.85-1.35), then supply restrictions (0.90-1.25) and demand changes (0.95-1.20). Simulation results indicate that the optimal solutions are invariant to ±10% parameter variations, whereas there are evident changes when the parameters exceed these limits. The sensitivity analysis points out that some of the parameters need to be carefully monitored in practice. This study enriches the current literature by quantifying parameter robustness and stability of optimal solution for decision-makers on multi-objective transportation systems.
